Parts of my Childhood- Julianna Rossi

Everyone has something from their childhood that they would cherish forever, mine are collectibles. Ever since I was a little girl my god-mother, Auntie Beth, would send me these little white figures called “snow babies”. I can’t even remember the first one she sent me because I have so many. But, I do remember I fell in love with them and all I wanted her to do was send me more. Whenever a special holiday came up, I knew I would be expecting a package from her and I’d get so excited. The best part was that she would always send me at least two at a time. So, as you can tell as time went on I had a bunch of snow babies. It got to the point where she would send me ones I already had because she forgot which ones she’s already sent me.

After a few years, I was running out of shelves in my room to put them on, they were taking over all the space. But, i’ll never forget when they started adding color to the snow babies. They were all white glass figures, then all of a sudden they started adding a little drop of color here and there. I still remember the first colored figurine I got, it was to snow babies playing with m&ms and the m&ms were all different colors. These little collectibles mean so much to me because its something just between me and my god mother. My god mother lives all the way up in Connecticut so I don’t get to see her that much, only when she comes and visits. I look at these snow babies as something that will always connect us, no matter what I’ll look at them and always think of her. Also, they are something I can pass on to my children when I’m older.

Since the day I was born I have always been daddy’s little girl. When I was little my favorite disney movie was The Little Mermaid, I was obsessed with it. One day, my dad surprised me with a little mermaid glass figurine. I still have it till this day and it is one of my favorites. My dad is one of my best friends and I do probably everything with him. I go fishing, scuba diving, surfing, and hunting with him. Basically, I do a lot of adventurous activities with my dad. Still, to this day my dad refers to me as his little mermaid.

Whenever I want to try something new I go straight to my dad. My dad grew up by the water, surfing and diving. I remember the day I told my dad I wanted to get scuba certified, he was so happy he couldn’t wait for me to start. Then when I got certified he taught me how to spearfish, I’ll never forget the day I shot my first fish, a hog snapper, and that was a whole different level of excitement. I grew up around the water and I love everything about it. Whenever I drive home for a weekend my dad always has a dive setup, so we can spend the whole day on the boat. My dad always calls me his mermaid because I always want to be in the water doing something. I love being outside in the sun and by the water.

I had a family member that would send me little mementos too. Whenever my grandpa would go out of the country for work he would bring me back something special from the place he visited.
I also am scuba certified! It’s the coolest experience being underwater. I totally agree with you, it is like you are a mermaid.

It is really amazing that you are scuba certified and I also loved how you associated the mermaid with your relationship with your dad.
