Childhood Objects-Maria Biondo

Object 1: When I first moved to my new house in Ft. Lauderdale I was in third grade and really did not know many kids. I was having a hard time adjusting to a new school and making friends seemed impossible. My mom thought it good idea to buy me a pet to bond with. Her original intent was to buy me a fish, but when she went to the pet store she saw that a kitten had just been rescued and fell in love with him right away. He was two weeks old and had gotten lost from his mother, the kitten was so small that it had to stay up in the front with the employees. My mom right away bought him and took him home. I remember how oddly shaped his body was, he had a huge head but a small body, he was so tiny that he fit in the palm of your hand. His coat had stripes on the back, legs and tail and spots on his belly. His voice was super high-pitched and sounded like a squeaky door hinge when he meow. His coat was soft to the touch and was long. He always smelled goof because i use to give him baths, washing him with baby soap. I named him little bit because he was so small when we first got him that we would lose him sometimes, but he was now grown to be huge and weighs almost 20 pounds. He made a close bond with me out of my family, he would always follow me around and sleep next to me at night and wake me up in the morning for school by licking my face. He has been a major part in my childhood.

Object 2: It was early morning Valentine’s Day, I could smell the sweet candy my mom was laying out for me and my brother. I jumped out of bed thinking about what my gift was going to be, I stomped as hard as I could going down  the stairs to give my mom a warning that I was on my way. As soon as I got down stairs I ran right to my gift. It was a bear with candy surrounding it. The bear was hot pink with a light pink heart in the middle of its chest. The fur was soft as silk and felt so good against my skin as I hugged it. The fur had like a slight curl to it, making it look wild. The is a baby pink bow tied around the neck and it had piercing black eyes.  I do not really remember how I came up with the name but I named her Princess. She went everywhere with me, on every family vacation to every sleep over. For as long as I can remember she has always stayed on my bed and has not moved. When build-a-bear open I went and bought clothes for her. Princess has been in my life for over 10 years and is my favorite childhood object.

Reading about the bear you got on Valentine’s Day reminds me of how my mom used to give my brother and me little gifts and candy on that day too! I also have a teddy bear that i kept throughout my childhood and still have!
